Why are people always barefoot in professional photographs?

My friends got there photo taken by a professional photographer in my town because she’s doing it for half price and they showed me there photos. I saw none of them were wearing shoes. Even in other catalogues for photographers the models are always barefooted. Is this because the photographer asks you to take your shoes off or is it just common knowledge that you do? I don’t want to wear my expensive heels if I’m just going to be asked to take them off again!
